“Forty-six apartments for seniors” a plaque proclaims. This is Building 104 in Charlestown. It’s more than just brick and mortar. It’s a testament to collaboration and a vision.

This unassuming building in the Charlestown Navy Yard holds a remarkable story. Originally constructed in 1901 as a shipfitting building it stood silent for years. Then a union leader Thomas J McIntyre had a dream. He envisioned transforming this space. He imagined creating affordable housing for Boston’s aging population.

McIntyre’s vision wasn’t just a pipe dream. He forged partnerships. He brought together Boston’s labor unions City Hall and financial institutions. They worked together. They created award-winning affordable housing. Building 104 wasn’t just renovated. It was reimagined. Two new floors were added. Three interior courtyards brought light and life. Historic brickwork was meticulously repaired. The building’s exterior was restored. It was made energy efficient.

Building 104 opened its doors in the early 1990s. It offered 46 one-bedroom apartments. It transformed a long-closed shipfitters shop into a beacon of hope for older adults. It provided a haven. It showed the power of partnership.

The Bricklayers Non-Profit Housing Corporation BNHC managed Building 104 for 30 years. They ensured that the apartments remained affordable. They provided a wonderful life for the residents. In 2022 ownership transferred to The Community Builders TCB. TCB pledged to continue BNHC’s legacy. They installed a plaque honoring McIntyre’s work and BNHC’s dedication.

Today Building 104 stands as a symbol. It shows what can be accomplished through collaboration. It’s a place where history and hope meet. It’s a reminder that even old structures can be revitalized. They can provide shelter and community for generations to come. So look closely. See the history in the brick. Feel the warmth of a community. Feel the pride in what’s been built here at Building 104.
