Slipping through time, imagine East New York before the mid-20th century. Breukelen Ballfields wasn’t a recreational hub then. It was a marshy expanse connected to Fresh Creek. Development ended abruptly at 105th Street and Stanley Avenue. This watery landscape transformed when the city earmarked the land for public housing in 1950. The housing project was completed in 1952. Breukelen Ballfields emerged alongside it, a green space designed for the new community. In 1957, the New York City Housing Authority made a generous gesture. They leased the land to NYC Parks, rent-free, ensuring the park’s future. Now, Breukelen Ballfields is more than just ballfields. It boasts baseball fields, dog-friendly areas, playgrounds, handball courts, spray showers, and bathrooms. More recently, Breukelen Ballfields underwent a significant revitalization thanks to a partnership between NYC Parks, the New York Liberty, and the Brooklyn Nets. A $1.8 million investment from Clara Wu Tsai’s Social Justice Fund brought new life to the basketball courts. The project is part of a broader effort to create safe and engaging recreational spaces in neighborhoods affected by gun violence. Today, Breukelen Ballfields stands as a testament to community partnership. The upgraded courts boast a fresh, vibrantly colored seal-coated surface, new backboards, hoops, and bleachers. It’s a safe and welcoming space for residents of East New York and beyond. It’s a place where community members can come together, forge connections, and celebrate the power of sport.
