Was this square always Breitenbachplatz? No. Originally named Rastatter Platz it gained its current name in 1913. This coincided with the opening of the U-Bahn station below. Breitenbachplatz sits in Dahlem at the edge of Steglitz and Wilmersdorf. It’s a place of quiet history. A place where the past whispers through the architecture.

The U-Bahn station itself is a testament to a bygone era. Architect Wilhelm Leitgebel designed it. His stone pylons and ornate metal gates still stand. They are remnants of a time when even underground spaces were works of art. Inside the station paintings by Joachim Szymczak grace the walls. They depict the life of Prussian Minister of Public Works Paul von Breitenbach. The square is named in his honor. He played a crucial role in building the very U-Bahn line that runs beneath Breitenbachplatz.

The above-ground Breitenbachplatz isn’t just a transit hub. It’s a living tapestry woven from different eras. Georg Kuphaldt designed the landscaping. His vision is still apparent today despite the later addition of a highway overpass. This highway overpass was a major upheaval. Residents fought its construction. It remains a controversial part of the square’s identity. Ironically it provided an additional entrance to the U-Bahn as a supposed compensation.

Breitenbachplatz tells a story of change. The early 20th century saw residential and commercial buildings sprout. The Reichsknappschaftshaus a Bauhaus masterpiece stands as a silent witness. It borders the square. The Berlin Marathon frequently passes its northern end. This spot has been a site of both growth and destruction. A bomb destroyed houses during World War II. This led to the deaths of 27 people in a nearby shelter.

The square isn’t just about grand buildings and tragic events. It also holds the stories of everyday life. There was a time when the square had a bustling newspaper kiosk. Today a Russian migrant often sells papers there. There’s a modern-looking snack bar now. Many locals miss the old-fashioned pub that once stood in its place. Regular markets enliven the square. A Petanque club sometimes plays on the sand. Even a citizen’s initiative uses the square for boules games.

Breitenbachplatz is more than a simple square. It’s a historical narrative. It’s an ongoing story of resilience and change. A place where the ghosts of the past mingle with the dynamism of the present. A Berlin landmark waiting to be explored. Its story is waiting to be discovered by those who take the time to listen.
