The Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald is more than just stunning scenery. It’s a Landkreis a district in southwestern Baden-Württemberg. It’s a region steeped in history. Fifty towns and municipalities boast 133 settlements. The district’s administrative offices are located in Freiburg im Breisgau. This vibrant city is almost completely surrounded by the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald yet remains independent.

Our story begins centuries ago. The County of Breisgau and the County of Baar were formed in the 8th century. Both counties belonged to the Duchy of Alemannia. After the Frankish Empire dissolved the area joined East Francia. Later it became part of the Duchy of Swabia. In 1368 the Breisgau fell under Habsburg rule. The Fürstenberg princes dominated Baar. The Markgräflerland south of Freiburg belonged to the Margraves of Baden. Following the Napoleonic Wars the region became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden.

The Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district as we know it emerged in 1973. It was formed from the former districts of Freiburg Müllheim and Hochschwarzwald. The incorporation of municipalities like Munzingen Hochdorf Ebnet and Kappel into Freiburg shaped the district’s borders. Imagine the bustling activity of those decades of reorganization!

The region boasts diverse climates. Ihringen holds the record for the highest average annual temperature in Germany. In contrast the Feldberg summit marks Baden-Württemberg’s coldest spot. The Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald contains the warmest and coldest places in this state. A remarkable feat considering the 40.2 degrees Celsius recorded in March in 2003. This remains one of Germany’s highest ever recorded temperatures.

Today the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald thrives. Its economy relies on tourism wine and forestry. The Black Forest’s allure draws skiers and hikers. The vineyards produce excellent wines. The charming towns and villages offer a rich cultural experience.

The district’s coat of arms reflects its dual heritage. The Austrian and Baden colors represent the historical ties to both. A black eagle from the Fürstenberg princes’ coat of arms sits at the center. This emblem embodies the rich and complex history of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.
