Originally called Porte Saint-Martin, the Breisacher Tor stands before us. It is more than just an old gate. It is a survivor. This is the only remaining structure from Freiburg’s Baroque fortifications. These fortifications were designed by Vauban in 1677. Imagine Freiburg encircled by mighty walls. Now picture French troops dismantling them in 1745. Only this gate remained standing.

This gate became known as Breisacher Tor. It got its name because it directed traffic south. It led towards Breisach and Basel. The Breisacher Tor once welcomed royalty. Marie Antoinette, daughter of Empress Maria Theresa, passed through it. It was on her way to marry into the French royal court in 1770.

Look closely at the Breisacher Tor. Notice the differences in its structure. In the late 19th century, a third floor was added. A triangular gable now tops the central section. The building was used as a school at that time.

Consider the reshaping of Gartenstrasse in 1903. The east wing of the gate was removed. You can still see its outline marked in the pavement today. The Breisacher Tor suffered damage during World War II. It was restored in 1950/51. The restoration reflected its late 19th-century appearance.

For a time, an insurance company occupied it. Later, city administrative offices were housed here until 2007. In 1989, the area behind the Breisacher Tor was improved. Trees were planted and a small stream or “Bächle” was added.

Ownership changed hands in 2007. A private individual bought the Breisacher Tor. The building was renovated. Today, the University of Freiburg uses the upper floors. Seminars and lectures take place here. A restaurant occupies the ground floor. Diners enjoy the former entrance area as an outdoor terrace.

So, the Breisacher Tor is a landmark and a testament to Freiburg’s past. It has transformed over the centuries. It has been a gate, a school, an office, and now a place of learning and leisure. It connects the past with the present. It stands as a reminder of Freiburg’s resilience. The Breisacher Tor continues to be a vibrant part of the city’s life.
