Thirty-one meters high. That’s how tall the Bredeneyer Wasserturm is. Erected in 1921, it proudly stands on the highest geographical point in Bredeney. This historic water tower is at Walter-Sachsse-Weg.

Originally, the Bredeneyer Wasserturm served a vital purpose. It ensured the reliable supply of drinking water to the residents of Bredeney. The tower was built as an iron concrete skeleton. Its unique hexagonal base tapers upwards. It culminates in a distinctive gallery with railings.

Above this, a spherical wrought iron tank sits. This tank, built by Aug. Klönne, features another circular gallery at its widest point. The Bredeneyer Wasserturm is a testament to early 20th-century engineering.

In August 1990, the water tank received official recognition. It was placed under monument protection, recognizing its historical and architectural value. Then in 1997, the Bredeneyer Wasserturm transitioned into private hands. From 1997 to 2002, a remarkable transformation took place. The tower was converted into a residential and office space. It now spans nine floors.

One of the six exterior walls was replaced. A glass facade now graces the structure. A glass staircase and elevator tower were added. This provides access to the different levels.

The revitalization of the Bredeneyer Wasserturm earned acclaim in 2013. It was honored by the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas”. This award recognized the tower as an innovative concept for the city of tomorrow. The Bredeneyer Wasserturm exemplifies how industrial landmarks can be repurposed.

Walter Sachsse’s legacy is intertwined with the tower’s location. He was the last mayor of independent Bredeney. The street is named after him. The street where the Bredeneyer Wasserturm is located.

The Bredeneyer Wasserturm is surrounded by trees. Its unique Kugelkopfbehälter design stands out. The riveted steel plates of the container add to its character. A lantern crowns the structure. The open steel staircase enhances its modern appeal.

The Bredeneyer Wasserturm is not just a building. It’s a symbol of Essen’s industrial past. It is also an example of innovative reuse. As you stand here, consider its history. Imagine the water it once held. Envision its transformation into a modern living space. The Bredeneyer Wasserturm remains a beacon. It connects Essen’s past and future.
