A two-story cube with rounded corners stands before you. This is the Bread House. Its red brick walls are richly decorated. Layers of windows cornices and friezes adorn the facade.

The Bread House is part of Tsaritsyno’s grand ensemble. It’s the largest surviving building from the original Bazhenov design. Built between 1784 and 1785 it served as the palace kitchen. After Catherine the Great’s death it housed a hospital and later communal apartments.

Architect Matvey Bazhenov planned a complex kitchen system. A “upper kitchen” was intended for the imperial family. Middle and lower kitchens catered to nobles based on their rank. Catherine’s disapproval of Bazhenov’s work led to his dismissal. Rumors suggest it was due to his Masonic connections. Masonic symbols are found throughout Bazhenov’s Tsaritsyno buildings. They are on the Bread House too. A monogram of crossed Russian letters X and C is above the bread and salt high reliefs. This could represent bread and salt. However some believe it symbolizes Masonic building tools.

The Bread House is more than just a historical building. It’s now a lively cultural space. After its 2006 reconstruction its halls host exhibitions. A central atrium was added. In 2008 a German-made organ was installed. The organ’s design was carefully considered to match the hall’s acoustics. Now the atrium regularly hosts organ music concerts.

The Bread House is a testament to a bygone era. It is a symbol of opulence and intrigue. It is also a vibrant hub for the arts. It quietly stands as a witness to centuries of Russian history. Enjoy your visit to this remarkable landmark.
