Did you know that Brazos Country, Texas, was once a working ranch owned by Paul Chew? The land was so expansive that what is today the town of Brazos Country was just a tiny fraction of it. Then, in 1978, Josey Oil Company, a family-owned oil company from Houston, bought 650 acres of the Chew Ranch. Like a magic trick, the land was subdivided, streets were laid, and two water wells were drilled, transforming the land into a new residential community. They named it Brazos Country, a nod to the mighty river that flowed nearby.
So here you are, in the heart of Brazos Country, a small town packed with life. The town has a fascinating story and a unique history, all rooted in the very land it stands on. While that oil company was busy shaping the community, another part of the Chew Ranch remained, a vast stretch of land next to the Brazos River. This land turned into something entirely different – the River Ridge Golf Club. It was a 27-hole public golf course and is a testament to the diversity of this land and its transformations. The golf course is no longer operating, but you can still find its footprint here in the town.
In 2000, the town held an election to incorporate. The vote was a resounding “yes”, a testament to the community’s spirit. But there was a twist – the city’s boundaries were limited to just two square miles. This made it a “Class B municipality”. The small town of Brazos Country has a government, including a mayor and five councilmen, all dedicated to serving this tight-knit community.
