Is it possible to hear whispers from the past within these rocks? We are now standing at the entrance to Bray’s Cave. This limestone cave is high on the western slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar. It holds secrets from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. Imagine people returning here again and again. They were not just seeking shelter. They came to bury their dead.

Bray’s Cave sits 400 metres above sea level. Notice its location on the western slopes. Caves are less common here than on the eastern cliffs. Before archaeologists arrived, the cave was full of debris. Rockfalls and sediments had filled it almost completely. It looked more like a rock shelter than a cave.

Excavation was hard work. It revealed the cave’s true form and history. Bray’s Cave formed along the limestone layers. It runs north-south and dips to the west. Inside, you would have seen many speleothems. These are the formations typical of enclosed caves.

Archaeologists found three distinct phases of human occupation inside Bray’s Cave. There were also two sterile layers without archaeological finds.

The top layer represents modern use from the 18th to 20th centuries. Below that is a medieval layer. Ceramic finds and animal bones point to 14th-century Marinid shepherds. They used Bray’s Cave as a refuge. They left behind pottery and remains of their hearths. Many goat bones were also found.

The deepest layer dates to the Bronze Age. This was when Bray’s Cave was used for burials. The burials were carefully organized. Some used the cave’s rimstone formations.

A large, circular rimstone sits at the bottom of the cave. It is about 1.5 metres in diameter. Limestone fragments surround it. This marks the closure of an important burial site. Here, multiple secondary burials took place. The rimstone was adapted as a cist or niche. Burials are scattered throughout Bray’s Cave. Some areas were for burial. Others resulted from moving remains to reuse the space.

Along with human remains, pottery shards emerged. Common Bronze Age finds include bowls and pots. Goat and shellfish remains show what these communities ate.

The finds at Bray’s Cave are very important. They add to the number of known burial sites from this period in southern Iberia.

Archaeologists discovered more than just bones and pottery here at Bray’s Cave. They uncovered stories of life and death. They revealed ancient rituals and daily struggles. As you stand here, remember the people who once stood where you do. They sought shelter, mourned their dead and left their mark on this very cave. Their stories are etched in the stone around us. They echo through the ages. Bray’s Cave remains a silent witness to their lives.
