The Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln was founded by Augustine monks in 1621. From the end of the 18th century until 1851 the building served as an army barrack. However in 1835 Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria gave it to the Benedictine Abbey in Michaelbeuern. The Benedictines expanded the beer garden. Locals flocked there especially on weekends and holidays. In 1912 the Benedictines invested in a brewhouse. This brewhouse still exists in its original form today.

The Augustiner Bräustübl in Mülln is considered Austria’s largest establishment of its kind. It has 5000 square meters of floor space. There are 2400 seats divided into five large halls three smaller rooms and a splendid beer garden with chestnut trees. In 2017 the Abt-Nicolaus-Saal was added. It is the historic marble hall of Salzburg’s main railway station moved to Mülln. The Bräustübl welcomes over 600000 visitors a year. It is home to over 240 Stammtische tables for regulars. Most guests want to enjoy Augustiner beer. The brewery’s annual beer output is over 18000 hectoliters.

It takes about 12 weeks to brew Augustiner beer. They use hops malt yeast and water. They adhere to the Purity Law. In 2012 the brewhouse technology was updated. The traditional recipe remains. The brewing process includes open chilling of the beer wort and open fermentation vats. A brewery tour lets you witness this art firsthand.

Classic Augustiner Märzen beer is available year-round. Seasonal varieties include Fastenbier lent beer and Bock beer. Both have higher levels of original extract and alcohol.
