“A crisp Ganter Pilsner on a sunny Freiburg afternoon” That’s what I picture. But our story of Brauerei Ganter isn’t just about beer. It’s about resilience. It’s about Freiburg itself.

Right here before us stands Brauerei Ganter. Founded in 1865 by Louis Ganter this brewery has witnessed Freiburg’s history unfold. It began in a Renaissance building once owned by Erasmus of Rotterdam. Can you imagine the history those walls hold? Think of the countless stories whispered within those very stones. Then in 1854 it became the Ringwald Brewery before moving to its present location ten years later.

The brewery’s early twentieth century was challenging. The World Wars devastated Europe. Ganter suffered too. Their original city center building was destroyed during Operation Tigerfish in 1944. Further bombings followed only days later. Yet this brewery survived.

After the devastation of war Brauerei Ganter was rebuilt. It became a symbol of Freiburg’s recovery and strength. The brewery expanded. In 1979 they took over the Löwenbrauerei Freiburg. A partnership with Inselbrauerei Feierling further cemented their success.

Today Brauerei Ganter offers a wide variety of beers. Their 4.9% Ganter Pilsner is a classic. They also brew a Freiburger Pilsner a special export beer and several wheat beers. The strong Bock beer Wodan a nourishing brew since 1898 is a particular favorite for its rich flavor.

Beyond beer Brauerei Ganter branched out. OGA their associated company produces alcohol-free drinks. An orange lemonade proved incredibly popular. This success led to expansion into other fruit juices and lemonades.

The brewery grounds even became a concert venue. Diana Ross performed there in 2005 celebrating the brewery’s 140th anniversary. Simply Red and Dieter Thomas Kuhn followed in 2006. The brewery isn’t just a producer of fine beverages. It’s a cultural hub. It is a part of Freiburg’s identity.

So as you stand before Brauerei Ganter remember its story. Remember its resilience and its contribution to the rich tapestry of Freiburg’s past and present. Raise a glass to the history and future of this incredible brewery. Cheers!
