Gazing at this majestic arch, one might mistake it for its famous Berlin cousin. But look closer. This is the Brandenburg Gate of Potsdam, a monument whispering tales of Prussian triumphs and architectural ingenuity. Frederick the Great, flushed with victory in the Seven Years’ War, commissioned this gate in 1770. It predates Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate by nearly two decades. The Brandenburg Gate stands as a symbol of peace, marking the route once taken to the town of Brandenburg. This explains its name. Unlike its Berlin counterpart, Potsdam’s gate was never part of a city wall. It has always stood as a freestanding structure, even more so after the city wall’s demolition around 1900. The gate boasts a fascinating duality. Its two faces, designed by different architects, tell different stories. Carl von Gontard designed the inner, city-facing side. It is a restrained, almost austere facade, featuring pilasters and trophies. His pupil, Georg Christian Unger, crafted the outer face. This side explodes with ornamentation, reminiscent of Rome’s Arch of Constantine. Pairs of Corinthian columns project outwards, framed by elaborate sculptures. This contrast reflects the dual nature of the gate itself – a symbol of both military might and the peace that follows. Look closely at the sides of the gate. You’ll notice two pedestrian entrances. These weren’t part of the original design. Frederick William IV added them in 1843 to accommodate the growing pedestrian traffic. They are a subtle reminder of how even monuments must adapt to the changing times. The Brandenburg Gate stands at the western end of Brandenburger Straße. This street stretches eastward, leading you through the heart of Potsdam to the Church of Peter and Paul. As you walk through the gate, imagine the echoes of history. Think of Frederick the Great, returning victorious from war. Visualize the citizens of Potsdam, passing through this gate in their daily lives. The Brandenburg Gate isn’t just a monument. It’s a portal to the past, a testament to Prussian ambition and a beautiful piece of architectural art.
