Over 5000 cherry trees. Can you believe it? That’s what awaits us in Branch Brook Park. This isn’t just any park. This is the nation’s first county park. Established in 1895 it’s a treasure trove of history and natural beauty.

Branch Brook Park began its life very differently. The northern part was once a swamp known as Old Blue Jay Swamp. Imagine that. A swamp in the heart of what would become a vibrant park. Then came the Civil War. This area served as a training ground for soldiers. Later Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux famous for Central Park even considered this site for a park in 1867. Their vision was grand a sprawling green space. But funding wasn’t secured at the time.

The park we see today is the result of decades of work. It started small just 60 acres. But thanks to private donations from prominent Newark families like the Ballantines the park expanded. It grew to encompass nearly 360 acres a massive urban green space. The park’s transformation included turning the swamp into a landscaped lake.

One of Branch Brook Park’s most spectacular features is its cherry blossom collection. A gift from Caroline Bamberger Fuld in 1927 these over 5000 trees representing over eighteen varieties are truly a sight to behold. Every April they transform the park into Cherryblossomland drawing thousands of visitors to the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.

The park also boasts impressive architecture. The Beaux-Arts firm of Carrère and Hastings designed two subway bridges offering convenient access from downtown Newark. The park’s design evolved over time. Initially romantic garden themes dominated. Later the Olmsted Brothers firm redesigned it. They gave it the naturalistic look we see today with meadows forests and gracefully curving paths.

Branch Brook Park wasn’t just a place of beauty. During World War II it even served as a tent city for recruits and a landing strip for postal service airplanes. It’s a park with a rich and multifaceted history. A place where nature architecture and history intertwine.

Today Branch Brook Park continues to thrive. A restoration program brought back its former glory. Statues of Althea Gibson and Roberto Clemente now stand as tributes to sports excellence. The park is a place for recreation. It’s a place of historical significance. Most importantly it’s a cherished part of Newark’s identity. So let’s explore this remarkable park. Let’s experience its beauty and delve deeper into its captivating story.
