“Lal Mandir” is what the locals call it and its story stretches back centuries. You are standing before the Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir. This temple stands as Delhi’s oldest Jain temple. It is located in the bustling Chandni Chowk area.
Picture this it is 1656. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan is on the throne. He invited Jain merchants to settle in Delhi. They were granted land near Chandni Chowk. This is where they built a temple.
Initially it was a simple structure. A Jain officer in the Mughal army kept a holy statue in his tent. This tent became a place of worship. It attracted other Jain officers. Eventually a temple was built at this very site. It was then known as “Urdu temple”. That was because of its location near Urdu Bazaar. It was also known as “Lashkari Mandir” referring to an army camp.
Interesting fact Shah Jahan’s successor Aurangzeb wasn’t a friend to other religions. Legend says he banned musical instruments in the temple. Miraculously the sounds of drums were still heard. Aurangzeb himself came to investigate. He lifted the ban appreciating the miracle.
The temple complex showcases Indo-Jain architecture. The red sandstone exterior is striking. It contrasts with the white marble interiors. A Manastambha column stands tall at the entrance. It symbolizes shedding pride before entering. The main devotional area has three red sandstone spires. Shikhars adorn the temple. These majestic red structures weren’t part of the original construction.
Inside you will find shrines dedicated to Jain deities. The main shrine is for Lord Mahavira. He was the 24th Tirthankara. Statues of Lord Parshvanatha and Lord Rishabhanatha are also here. Frescoes and paintings narrate Jain stories.
Another unique feature is the Jain Birds Hospital. It is located within the temple complex. This hospital treats thousands of birds every year. It started in 1930.
The Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir represents cultural preservation. It stands as a revered place for Jains worldwide. It is a cultural icon in Old Delhi. Take a moment to appreciate the history and serenity here. It is a reminder of faith that has endured through centuries.
