Braeswood Assembly of God Church

In 1943, a simple tent revival meeting in downtown Houston sparked a flame. This flame would become the Braeswood Assembly of God Church. Reverend A. L. Samford led those early gatherings. The meetings were so popular that a permanent structure was needed. The first Braeswood Assembly of God Church building was constructed in 1944. In 1948, Reverend Samford passed the leadership torch to Pastor N.L. White. Samford then dedicated himself to evangelistic work. The growing congregation moved to a larger building in 1952. They moved again in 1960, further establishing the church’s presence. Pastor White guided the church for over two decades. He retired in 1970. Pastor Earl J. Banning stepped into the role. Under his leadership, Braeswood Assembly of God Church experienced tremendous growth. The congregation expanded from 125 to over 2,500 attendees. The current worship facility was dedicated in 1974. The N.L. White Education Building was added in 1987. This honored the legacy of the church’s second pastor. Pastor Earl Banning retired in 1997. His son, Pastor Steve Banning, was chosen as Co-Pastor. This began a two-year transition. Pastor Steve became Senior Pastor in 2000. His father, Pastor Earl, remained as Co-Pastor. This ensured a smooth handover. Braeswood Assembly of God Church continued to thrive under Pastor Steve. The church expanded its ministry and outreach. In 2014, a West Campus was opened on Branch Forest Drive. The Braeswood Assembly of God Church continued its growth and community impact. More recently, in 2024, Pastor John Faleye became the new Lead Pastor. This followed a year of serving as Co-Pastor. Braeswood Assembly of God Church has a rich history of growth and service. From a tent revival to a multi-campus church, it has impacted countless lives. The church remains a vibrant part of the Houston community.
