Brændesgard

Is Brændesgård a name whispered with reverence by those who study the mysteries of the past? You see, right here, tucked away in the fields west of Østermarie Stationsby, lies not one, but two whispering echoes of ancient lives – Brændesgård 1 and Brændesgård 2. These are not grand castles or towering monuments. Brændesgård holds the secrets of the Bronze Age, etched onto the very landscape itself. These are rock carvings, or helleristninger as they are known here, and they speak to us across millennia. Imagine, if you will, the people who walked here long ago, their lives so different from our own. On the rock face of Brændesgård 1, you can still make out their stories – 60 cup marks, the imprints of 16 feet, and four elongated figures, one eerily shaped like a curved knife. Two circular depressions, made by fire-cutting, hold cup marks at their very center. One hundred meters to the north lies Brændesgård 2, where 41 cup marks and a curious Y-shaped figure are etched into the stone. These carvings, silent for centuries, whisper a story of a time when the sun, moon, and stars held a different power. A time when rituals were performed, perhaps under a sky ablaze with stars, marking the changing seasons, the cycle of life and death.
