Established in 1917 Brackenridge High School stands proudly in San Antonio. It’s one of the city’s oldest public high schools. The school was named for George Washington Brackenridge a strong advocate for women’s suffrage and higher education.
Initially the school occupied a grand three-story brick building. However this impressive structure was eventually demolished in 1974. A newer building replaced it. Interestingly the school briefly changed its name to Phillis Wheatley High School in 1974. This honored the renowned African-American poet. However the original name Brackenridge High School was reinstated in 1988 following requests from alumni.
