“Did you know that Bracken Ridge Uniting Church started its journey in a school staff room?” That’s right. This very church began its life in 1977. It wasn’t in this beautiful building you see before you. It started modestly within the Bracken Ridge State School. The congregation first gathered for worship in the staff room. Later they moved to the school library. Bookshelves were rearranged for services. An old pedal organ provided the music. Think of it. Services held amidst textbooks and school supplies.
Bracken Ridge Uniting Church is a vibrant multicultural congregation. Its members share a deep passion for God and their community. They are ordinary people following the teachings of Jesus Christ. They welcome newcomers into their journey of faith. Every Sunday at 930 am the church doors open for worship. The only exceptions are Christmas Day and Good Friday when services start at 830 am.
The church’s story involves a remarkable feat of community spirit. Imagine the dedication involved. The current building was not just built by contractors. It involved immense volunteer efforts. Over 1200 hours were donated for Saturday working bees alone. Local people took on tasks ranging from painting and electrical work to landscaping and external concreting. This wasn’t just building a church. It was a collective effort of faith and fellowship.
The land itself has an interesting history. The church acquired the property on the corner of Pellinore Road and Bracken Street. It was purchased from the Gaskell family. The Synod had previously purchased two adjacent blocks. They were intended for future church development. These were later sold to Sandgate Parish. The total cost of the land was $21000. An old house on the property was used by youth groups until it was sold and removed in 1980. A state government grant helped with building costs.
On November 7 1981 the new Bracken Ridge Uniting Church was officially opened. Reverend DJ Brandon led the dedication ceremony. The very next day Reverend Ted Hutton conducted the first service. Today this special place continues to serve its community providing spiritual nourishment and fellowship. It is a testament to the faith and effort of those who built it. It is also a beacon of hope and welcome. It is truly a cornerstone of the Bracken Ridge community.
