Feel the cool spray of the Braamfontein Spruit. This isn’t just any stream. It’s Johannesburg’s longest. It begins its journey at Barnato Park High School. Can you imagine a school with its own river source? Barnato himself created a lake here in 1897. It was big enough for boats. A remnant of that lake’s edge is still visible today. A huge cork tree planted by Barnato stands as a silent witness.

The Braamfontein Spruit flows through the city’s heart. It winds its way past Pieter Roos Park. Then it runs down Empire Road to Frank Brown Park. It continues its path. It even passes the German School in Parktown. The spruit travels near Parkview Golf Course. Sections are canalised there. But beyond the golf course it flows free. It runs through Parkhurst.

Near Parkhurst the Westdene Spruit joins the Braamfontein Spruit. The Braamfontein Spruit continues its journey. It flows through River Club. Then on to Bryanston Rivonia and Sunninghill. In Sunninghill the Sand Spruit merges with it. Finally the Braamfontein Spruit meets the Jukskei River at Leeuwkop Prison. This incredible journey is almost 30km.

The Braamfontein Spruit wasn’t always appreciated. In the 1970s it was neglected. Litter and ‘unsavoury characters’ plagued it. But a huge clean-up effort began in 1974. Hundreds of people volunteered their time. They removed tons of rubbish. They cleared hectares of overgrown vegetation. The result? The Braamfontein Spruit became the longest municipal park globally. The clean-up was a massive success.

Today the Braamfontein Spruit is a popular spot. Walkers runners and cyclists enjoy its banks. It’s a green lung for Johannesburg residents. A world-class river park is the ongoing aim. It’s a testament to community effort and a wonderful natural space. The Braamfontein Spruit is more than a waterway. It’s a symbol of Johannesburg’s resilience and beauty.
