“It has been my long cherished desire to have a place in the heart of the city which could be made a center of Holy Fire and where the gospel could be preached to the poor.” These words Dr Phineas F Bresee a founder of the Church of the Nazarene spoke over a century ago. They echo powerfully here at the Boyle Heights Church of the Nazarene. We stand before a building that embodies his vision.
The Boyle Heights Church of the Nazarene is not just a church. It’s a living testament to faith hope and community. It’s deeply rooted in the history of Los Angeles. Its story is interwoven with the city’s growth and the struggles of its people.
The Church of the Nazarene denomination itself began in 1895. Bresee and Dr JP Widney sought to establish a church focused on the holiness of the gospel. This holiness was to be lived through acts of love particularly among the city’s poor. The first locations were in downtown Los Angeles. One location was even known as the Glory Barn.
The Boyle Heights Church of the Nazarene wasn’t always in this location. The congregation moved several times. Their commitment to the community however never wavered. Their growth led to the creation of three additional congregations. Spanish Korean and Filipino. The Bresee Foundation a non-profit organization was also established to address the community’s social needs.
