Step inside the Bowne Street Community Church. Feel the weight of history. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to religious freedom. A place where different faiths have found a home.

The Bowne Street Community Church in Flushing Queens has a rich past. Originally built in 1892 it’s a stunning example of Romanesque Revival architecture. Think tall bell tower intricate brickwork beautiful stained glass.

Before this building existed the Reformed Dutch Church of Flushing was established in 1842. Their congregation grew quickly. A new church was needed. They chose this prime location at the corner of Bowne and Amity streets now Roosevelt Avenue.

The construction was a major undertaking. Edward Richardson oversaw the project. The cornerstone was laid in 1891. Sunday services began in May 1892. The dedication followed in November of that year. The church seated about 700 people. A significant expansion for the growing community.

But the story doesn’t end there. This church has a unique connection to the Flushing Remonstrance. This 1657 petition championed religious tolerance. The Bowne Street Community Church continues this legacy. Multiple congregations worship within its walls. The Reformed Church in America the United Church of Christ and the Taiwanese Zion Christian Church all call it home. Even an independent Korean congregation the New York Yeram Church holds services here.

The stained glass windows deserve special mention. Created by the Tiffany Glass Company they were designed by Agnes Fairchild Northrup. A talented artist and longtime member of the congregation. These windows are a breathtaking sight.

In 1974 a significant merger occurred. The Reformed Church of Flushing and the First Congregational Church of Flushing united. Sadly the older Congregational Church burned down on Christmas Eve of 1970. Despite this setback the two congregations formed the Bowne Street Community Church. A symbol of unity and perseverance.

So stand here. Absorb the beauty and significance of the Bowne Street Community Church. More than just bricks and mortar it represents religious freedom tolerance and the enduring power of faith. A place where history echoes through the stained-glass windows. A place of unity. A place of worship. A place of sanctuary.
