Craving panoramic views? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Right here, looming before us, is Bowen Peak, a worthy neighbor to the more famous Ben Lomond.

Bowen Peak stands at 1,631 meters. It offers stunning vistas of Queenstown. The Remarkables mountain range is also visible. You can even see Mount Aspiring and Coronet Peak.

For years, keen hikers have quietly rated Bowen Peak as one of the best climbs in the area.

Did you know Bowen Peak is easily accessible from Queenstown? You can reach it via Ben Lomond Crescent or the Tiki Trail near the Skyline Gondola. Most people hike to Ben Lomond Saddle first. Then, they extend their walk to Bowen Peak.

The hike from Ben Lomond Saddle to Bowen Peak takes about 45 minutes each way. There isn’t a marked track. But the route is relatively straightforward.

You’ll traverse sub-alpine scrub. Patches of bare shingle make the walking easier. It’s never too challenging.

In winter, however, crampons are advised. The conditions on Bowen Peak can change rapidly. Sleet, snow, and high winds are possible.

The summit of Bowen Peak is peaceful. It contrasts with the often-crowded summit of Ben Lomond. A rustic trig marker sits on top.

From here, you get a great view of Ben Lomond itself. The Wakatipu Basin stretches to the east. Look southeast for the “ski jump” outline of Peninsula Hill. It’s a roche moutonnée.

Local guides and keen hikers sometimes describe the traverse between Ben Lomond and Bowen Peak. It can be a real adventure.

To attempt this, descend from Ben Lomond back to the saddle. Then make your way up the unmarked Bowen Peak. It’s best to hike when visibility is good. That’s more than 100 meters.

The journey up Bowen Peak involves following goat tracks. This is not an official trail. It’s important to respect the fragile mountain ecosystem.

The final stretch involves navigating tussock-covered terrain. It’s a bit of a bushwhack. But the views make it worth it.

Bowen Peak offers a better view into the Arthurs Point Region. To the northwest, you can see Skippers Creek. On a clear day, you might even spot the mightier mountains near Mount Aspiring.

So, as you stand here, take a moment to appreciate Bowen Peak. It’s a testament to the beauty and challenge of New Zealand’s alpine landscape. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a novice adventurer, Bowen Peak promises an unforgettable experience.

Now, breathe in that crisp mountain air. Feel the peace and solitude. Imagine the stories the peak could tell. Stories of explorers, adventurers, and the ever-changing forces of nature that have shaped this incredible landscape.
