“A windy place”, whispered the old Aboriginal man to his grandson. “That’s what our ancestors called this land, long before the white man came.” He gestured to the bustling heart of Bowen Hills. Bowen Hills. A place teeming with life now, but once a sacred gathering ground for the Chepara people. Back then, they called it Barrambin. This hilltop, catching the breeze as it does, was a place of corroborees, of ceremonies, of kinship stretching back generations. They say that up to a thousand people, Aboriginal tribes from as far as Ipswich and the Tweed Valley, would gather here. They came for the important “kippa-ring” initiation ceremonies, the wind carrying their ancient songs across the land. Can you almost hear their chants, feel the beat of their feet on the ground? Sadly, very little remains of that rich indigenous history today. The winds of time and the tide of progress have swept away their physical traces. But the spirit of Barrambin, the “windy place”, lingers. Look around you. Bowen Hills, with its towering apartments, its bustling train station, its echoes of the grand Cloudland dance hall, carries within it the whispers of those who came before.
