Beneath the unassuming facade of Bourloire Saint-Eloi lies a world of tradition. This is a world largely unknown to those outside the region. Bourloire Saint-Eloi is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to a unique game called bourle.

Let’s step back in time for a moment. Imagine the early 20th century. Construction of Bourloire Saint-Eloi begins. This was a time when bourle was incredibly popular in northern France. Particularly in the Lille region.

The game of bourle involves skill and strategy. It is played on a specialized court called a bourloire. The bourloire is a concave area. It is typically 20 to 28 meters long. The aim is simple. Players must roll a wooden disc called a bourle as close as possible to a stake called the étaque.

Bourles are not your average spheres. They are large wooden discs. They weigh between 4 and 8 kilograms. Some variants use lighter bourles around 1.8 kilograms. These lighter bourles are made of walnut wood. The bourles are asymmetrical with one strong and one weak side.

The game can be played between two individuals. It can also be played between teams. Teams usually consist of three or six players. Each team has six bourles. A captain directs the team. They strategically position their bourles. Other team members launch their bourles to obstruct opponents.

Bourloire Saint-Eloi like other bourloires has a unique construction. Older bourloires were made from a mix of clay cow dung rye flour salt and beer. At each end is a pit called a cul. About 50 cm from each end is the étaque. This is either a copper disc or a stake.

In 2003 Bourloire Saint-Eloi was recognized for its cultural importance. It was officially registered as a historical monument. The bourloire itself and its playing area are protected.

Today Bourloire Saint-Eloi stands as a reminder of a bygone era. It keeps alive the tradition of bourle in the Lille region. So take a moment to appreciate this unique part of local heritage. A place where the spirit of bourle continues to roll on.
