Amidst the lively tapestry of Lille’s history, lies La Nouvelle Bourloire. It whispers tales of a beloved pastime, a game deeply woven into the fabric of this region. La Nouvelle Bourloire stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of “bourle,” a game that has captivated generations. This isn’t just a building. It’s a portal to a bygone era, a living museum of a sport unique to this corner of France. La Nouvelle Bourloire is one of eight surviving covered bourloires in Tourcoing. It earned its place on the register of historic monuments in 2003. The game of bourle, played within these hallowed halls, involves two teams of up to eight players. Each player skillfully rolls a bourle, a wooden disc weighing around 1.8 kg, towards a target called the “attaque.” The captains orchestrate the strategy. They designate players to create obstacles, known as “heillis,” to thwart their opponents’ progress. Adding to the challenge, each bourle has a heavier side, influencing its trajectory. This demands precision and finesse to navigate the obstacles. The aim is to place the bourles as close to the attaque as possible. La Nouvelle Bourloire, much like the other bourloires, is typically found at the back of a café. This connection highlights the social aspect of the game, where camaraderie and competition intertwine. Originally open-air, these spaces are now mostly covered, providing shelter from the elements. Imagine the clatter of wooden discs on the playing surface. Hear the cheers and shouts of encouragement as players strategize and aim. The very air within La Nouvelle Bourloire vibrates with the energy of the game. La Nouvelle Bourloire isn’t just a structure. It embodies the spirit of community. It serves as a gathering place where friendships are forged and traditions are kept alive. As you stand before La Nouvelle Bourloire, take a moment to appreciate its rich history. Remember the countless games played within its walls, and the laughter and camaraderie that have echoed through the years.
