What if I told you that the name Bourghelles itself holds a clue to its past? The name Bourghelles whispers tales of a “small fortress”. It comes from the Proto-Germanic words for “hill fort” and a diminutive suffix. This northern France commune resides in the Nord department.

Bourghelles’ story stretches back centuries. First recorded in 1197 as Borghela. It hints at a strategic location. Imagine a small fortress perched here long ago.

Let us stroll through Bourghelles. Visualize the landscape. The Chaussée Brunehaut divides the commune. On one side lies the chalky Mélantois. The other side reveals the clay Pévèle.

Bourghelles has seen its population rise and fall. In 1968 there were 922 residents. By 2022, the population reached 1678. This shows a steady growth over the decades.

Consider the heraldry of Bourghelles. The arms are blazoned. It is a silver shield with a red chief. Interestingly, Bourghelles shares these arms with Hem.

Let’s delve into the administration. Franck Sarre serves as the mayor from 2020 to 2026. Bourghelles falls within the Arrondissement of Lille. It is part of the Canton of Templeuve-en-Pévèle.

The église Saint-Pierre de Bourghelles is a must-see. Its oldest parts date back to the 12th century. The church has been expanded over the centuries. The current bell tower dates to 1921. Inside, admire the polychrome statue of Saint Peter. Gaze upon the baroque altars and retables. Notice the baptistery from 1571.

Not far from here is the château. It was bequeathed to the Hospice Comtesse de Lille. Within its wooded park rests a square motte. This could date back to the 10th century. The château still boasts vaulted cellars. The salons have sculpted wood panelling.

The Mairie is also worth a look. It incorporates the old presbytery. This remarkable 18th-century building has elegant stone and brick facades. Part of the Mairie was built in 1934. Architect Joseph Hentgès designed it in an Art Deco style.

Don’t miss the Ferme Sainte Barbe. It is located on the edge of the Chaussée Brunehaut. The entrance has a dovecote dated 1708. The main building dates from 1725.

Finally, there is a chapel on the Chaussée Brunehaut. Inside is a remarkable 17th-century Christ on the cross. The sculpture is life-size and made of oak.

The Giants of the North also touched Bourghelles. A giant named Gilbert de Bourghelles was inaugurated. The village has embraced this tradition.

Bourghelles’ blazon dates back to 1197. It was borne by the Bourghelles family. The blazon’s official status remains to be determined.

From its origins as a small fortress to its modern-day charm Bourghelles offers a glimpse into the history of northern France. As you leave Bourghelles remember the stories whispered by its name.
