It’s a provincial electoral district, a piece of the city’s democratic fabric named after a prominent figure in Quebec’s history: Robert Bourassa. This isn’t about streets or boulevards. The Bourassa electoral district holds its own stories. Robert Bourassa, born in Montreal in 1933, served twice as Premier of Quebec. His first term, beginning in 1970, saw the establishment of health insurance and the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms. He also declared French the official language of Quebec. Bourassa championed the James Bay hydroelectric project, a massive undertaking despite environmental, financial, and political challenges. He viewed hydroelectricity as a source of clean, renewable energy, a vision that clashed with opponents who favored nuclear power. After a defeat in 1976, Bourassa returned to lead the Quebec Liberal Party to victory in 1985. His second term focused on economic recovery and constitutional negotiations regarding Quebec’s status within Canada. He resigned in 1993 due to health issues and passed away in Montreal in 1996. The Bourassa electoral district stands as a reminder of his complex legacy, a legacy woven into the very fabric of Montreal and Quebec.
