High above Bountiful the Bountiful Utah Temple stands tall. Its Bethel white granite gleams in the sun. This magnificent structure is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith. It’s a place of profound spiritual significance for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Bountiful Utah Temple holds a special place in Latter-day Saint history. It’s the 47th operating temple of the church. It’s also the eighth temple built in Utah. Its unique story begins long before its construction. The land itself has a history. John Haven Barlow Sr purchased it in 1897. Years later flash floods reshaped the landscape. The city needed soil for a dam. This unexpectedly cleared the way for the temple.
The choice of this location was extraordinary. The entire First Presidency traveled to Bountiful in 1988. They chose this site together. President Ezra Taft Benson declared it a beautiful spot for the House of the Lord. It’s the only temple site ever chosen by the entire First Presidency. It’s also the only one personally selected by President Benson.
Four years later President Benson presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. He was 92 years old. The temple was designed to be a light on a hill. Both figuratively and literally. Its architecture ensures its visibility for miles. Light is a recurring motif within the temple itself. Its intensity increases as visitors move upward. The sealing rooms are the brightest areas.
The Bountiful Utah Temple’s design was influential. It served as a model for the Mount Timpanogos Temple. The Bountiful Temple is one of only two dedicated by President Howard W. Hunter. It’s a temple full of symbolism. The keystone represents Christ. The sun moon and stars are represented in the design too.
The dedication of the Bountiful Utah Temple was a momentous occasion. Two hundred thousand Latter-day Saints attended the dedicatory sessions. This was the largest attendance at a temple dedication in church history. Even today the temple continues to serve as a beacon of faith in Bountiful. A testament to the enduring spirit of its people.
