A shattered whisper of history, that’s the Boundary Stone. It stands as a silent testament to a time when Roxbury and Boston were distinct entities. This seemingly insignificant stone, broken and worn, holds a story of changing borders and expanding cities. The Boundary Stone, located near the intersection of Washington Street and Melnea Cass Boulevard, once marked the division between these two communities. In the early 19th century, it stood tall and proud, bearing the inscriptions “B” for Boston and “R” for Roxbury. Pictures taken in 1940 show the stone already cracked, its future uncertain. Today, the Boundary Stone remains, though altered by time and circumstance. It has been turned 90 degrees from its original position. The carved letters, once facing the street, now lie parallel to it. The top piece, sadly, is missing, lost to the passage of time and perhaps a bit of mischief. The Boundary Stone is more than just a broken piece of granite. It represents the growth and evolution of a city, the merging of communities, and the fading lines of old boundaries. As you stand before it, imagine the stagecoaches rumbling past, carrying travelers between Roxbury and Boston. Picture the bustling activity of a growing city, pushing against the boundaries of its neighbor. The Boundary Stone whispers stories of a time long past, a time when this simple marker represented a significant divide. It reminds us that even the most solid boundaries can shift and change, leaving behind fragments of history for us to discover and ponder.
