What’s in a name? A lot, especially when it comes to Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan. Right here, beneath our feet, lies a street steeped in history, a boulevard born from the ashes of a bygone era. Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan stretches from Boulevard de Berlaimont to Boulevard du Jardin Botanique, a vital artery in the heart of Brussels. Its creation, between 1947 and 1952, coincided with the massive North-South Junction railway project, a feat of engineering that reshaped the city. But Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan isn’t just a product of modern urban planning. Its name echoes a much older story, a tale of philanthropy and remembrance. Before the boulevard, there was a Rue Pachéco, a street named after Antoine Pacheco. Not for his own deeds, but for the generosity of his widow, Isabelle des Marez. She founded a hospice for women, named in her late husband’s honor, the first Hospice Pachéco. This act of charity ensured Antoine Pacheco’s name lived on, first in the street, then in the boulevard that replaced it. But the story of the hospice doesn’t end there. It moved several times throughout its history. The original building, located on Rue Pachéco, was demolished in 1827 to make way for the new Saint-Jean Hospital. That hospital, in turn, met its fate during the very construction of the North-South Junction, eventually rebuilt further down the road. So, as we stand here on Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan, we’re not just walking on a street. We’re treading on layers of history, on the echoes of a hospice that once offered refuge, a testament to Isabelle des Marez’s compassion, and a reminder of how a name can carry centuries of stories. Today, Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan is lined with significant buildings, including the State Administrative City, a sprawling complex of government offices, and the Passage 44 shopping arcade, a bustling hub of commerce. Even the Brussels-Congress station, a key transport link, stands as a witness to the boulevard’s modern significance. So, the next time you find yourself strolling along Boulevard Pachéco – Pachecolaan, remember the name, and the story it tells. A story of a woman’s love, a city’s transformation, and a boulevard that carries the weight of history within its very name.
