Together with Camille Guérin, he developed the BCG vaccine. It used an attenuated bovine bacillus. The BCG vaccine spread globally. It helped curb tuberculosis.

Émile Roux praised Calmette. He said Calmette demonstrated microbiology’s huge service to the country. Calmette’s work served as a model for institutes in overseas territories.

The Institut Pasteur network expanded. Institutes opened worldwide. They were in Turkey, China, India, Senegal, Brazil, Algeria and Congo. Today, the Pasteur Network has around thirty members. They all dedicate themselves to human health.
