Ever wondered where Berliners go for a modern shopping experience? The Boulevard Berlin is calling. It is not just a shopping center. It’s a story of transformation and modern Berlin life.

The Boulevard Berlin opened its doors on April 4, 2012. It quickly became one of Berlin’s largest shopping destinations. But its story began long before that. The location was once home to the Wertheim department store. This store was built in the 1960s.

To make way for the Boulevard Berlin, the old Wertheim structure was gutted. Only its basic framework remained. Architects Ortner & Ortner redesigned it. They created an independent building with a natural stone facade. The construction took place from 2009 to 2012. It cost around 390 million euros. The original building’s protected facade and stair tower were kept. They were integrated into the new design of the Boulevard Berlin.

The Treitschkestrasse was built over during construction. This street lies between Schlossstrasse and Harry-Bresslau-Park. It was designed like a promenade. This connects the Boulevard Berlin to the Karstadt department store with a glass passage.

At its opening, the Boulevard Berlin was Berlin’s 63rd shopping center. It was the fourth on Schlossstrasse. With 64,000 square meters of retail space, it’s one of the largest in Berlin. Only the Gropius Passagen and the Mall of Berlin are bigger.

The Boulevard Berlin has about 55 shops and restaurants. You will find brands like Saturn, Sportscheck and Zara here. The first operator was Multi Development from the Netherlands. Later, Corio Deutschland GmbH took over. This company then became part of the French Klépierre Group.

Since early 2022, the Boulevard Berlin has new owners. They plan to transform it into a mixed-use center. The retail space will be reduced. Office space will be added. This reflects a broader trend in Berlin.

The Boulevard Berlin also offers convenient parking. There is a parking garage with 850 spaces. It can be reached via Schildhornstrasse. The center has direct access to the Schlossstrasse U-Bahn station. This is on the U9 line. Several bus lines also stop here.

The Boulevard Berlin isn’t just a place to shop. It is a symbol of Berlin’s ever-changing urban landscape. It combines history with modern needs. As you explore its shops and walkways, remember the story. Remember the transformation that created this bustling center.
