Ever wondered where Botswana’s sporting dreams ignite? Right here at the Botswana National Stadium. This multi-purpose stadium in Gaborone is more than just concrete and seats. It is a place where national pride roars.

The Botswana National Stadium has a rich history. It was built in 1965 and opened in 1966. For decades, it has been the home of Botswana’s sporting ambitions. The stadium can hold 25000 people. Imagine the roar of the crowd.

The stadium is primarily used for football matches. It is home to the Botswana national football team. The Zebras play here. The Botswana National Stadium also hosts Township Rollers F.C. Gaborone United S.C. and Notwane F.C.

But the Botswana National Stadium is not just about football. An athletics track surrounds the pitch. A rugby venue and a tennis facility are nearby. Although the rugby venue has fallen into disuse. The stadium has ten stands. Three of them are covered. The west side has three covered stands. The east end has one giant uncovered stand.

In 2014, the Botswana National Stadium hosted the 2nd African Youth Games. The opening and closing ceremonies took place here. Track and field events were also held. A giant screen was erected on the middle north stand. The stadium also hosts Botswana Police Service Day and Botswana Defence Force Day. Botswana Independence Celebrations happen here too. Music festivals and church services also take place.

The Botswana National Stadium has undergone renovations. In 2008, it closed for refurbishment. The goal was to host teams competing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The tournament was in South Africa. But the renovations were behind schedule. The teams were instructed to train inside South Africa. The Botswana National Stadium sat unused.

The stadium became a white elephant. The Premier League and athletics suffered. Premier League teams rely on gate takings. Smaller stadiums limited their revenue. In June 2013, the stadium finally reopened. Township Rollers F.C. played Extension Gunners in the opening match. Gunners won 1-0.

In 2016, the Botswana National Stadium closed again. This was to increase its capacity. The country was preparing for its 50th independence celebrations. The capacity increased to 25000.

The Botswana National Stadium stands as a symbol of Botswana’s sporting spirit. It is a place where memories are made. A place where the nation comes together.
