Did you know Bothwell Parish Church boasts a history stretching back to the 6th century? This isn’t just any church. It stands on the very site of a former church dedicated to St Mary. Later it became associated with St Bride. This impressive building which we stand before has evolved over centuries.

Bothwell Parish Church is Scotland’s oldest collegiate church still used for worship. It holds a special place in Scottish history. Its rich past is woven into the very stones of its walls. The medieval choir dating back to 1398 is a testament to its longevity. Think of the countless stories these stones could tell. They’ve witnessed centuries of joy sorrow celebration and prayer.

Archibald Douglas the 3rd Earl of Douglas had a significant role in the church’s development. He built the current Collegiate Church in the late 14th century. Pope Benedict XIII gave his blessing for the building project. Eight priests were appointed. They continuously prayed for Douglas’s soul and the souls of others named. The church’s dedication in 1398 marked a pivotal moment. This was only two years before Douglas died.

The church has undergone several changes. Alterations were made to the nave in 1719 and 1833. David Hamilton designed the 1833 addition. Robert Rowand Anderson restored the choir in 1898. Further alterations happened in 1933. Today you can admire stunning stained glass. Works by Sir Edward Burne-Jones Gordon Webster and Douglas Strachan are featured.

In 2017 a major restoration project was completed. Five years of work saved the historic quire. The quire’s unique roof posed a considerable challenge. It consists of heavy stone slabs without timber support. This design caused the walls to warp. The restoration cost over £2 million. HRH The Princess Royal attended the re-dedication service.

The church is not only a place of worship. It’s a place of beauty and history. It’s a popular venue for weddings. People come from far and wide to get married here. Its elegant long aisle and intimate quire create a special atmosphere. This church continues to serve the community. It provides a place of sanctuary and celebration. A true testament to the enduring spirit of Bothwell.
