Did you know Bothwell Library began in 1910? It started thanks to James Donald. He was a local businessman.
Bothwell Library has a long history. It aimed to improve life in the mining community. It was meant to offer a better alternative to the pub.
Initially, the Donald Institute housed the library. The institute featured a games room. It also had a reading room. A billiard room with space for three tables was available. The library found a natural home here. Today, it is a listed building.
Bothwell Library has changed over the years. Now, it offers best-selling novels. Free internet access is also available. Bookbug sessions happen every Monday. A readers’ group meets monthly.
The library holds a local history collection. This includes books and maps. Statistical accounts and pamphlets are available. Photographs add to the collection. The librarians welcome donations of local materials. These items are for public reference.
Two large posters are on display. They show Bothwell “Then and Now”. In November 2016, Bothwell Library added a TV screen. It shows aspects of local history. It gives information about local organizations. The program changes regularly.
The Bothwell Historical Society is building a Heritage Corner in the library. It uses interesting historical items.
You can renew your library books here. This can be done in person. It can also be done by telephone. Online renewals are possible too. Renewals can occur up to three times. This is unless someone else has reserved the item.
Membership is free to those who live, work, or study in South Lanarkshire.
