Atop Phnom Bakheng’s ancient stones stand I. The Bothum Kongkea called Bakeng Pagoda is before you.

Phnom Bakheng is more than a pagoda. It’s a testament to King Yasovarman I’s reign from 889 to 910 AD. This hilltop temple was once the heart of Yasodharapura his new capital. It replaced Hariharalaya the old capital in the southeast Roluos area. Phnom Bakheng served as the main temple. It was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.

Initially a Hindu temple Phnom Bakheng later transformed into a Buddhist one. A monumental Sitting Buddha once graced its upper tier. A Reclining Buddha was also there its outlines still visible. This reflects the changing religious landscape of Angkor.

Built as a temple mountain Phnom Bakheng symbolically represents Mount Meru. Its seven levels represent the seven heavens. Originally 108 small towers surrounded it. They represented the four lunar phases each with 27 days. Most have sadly collapsed. The temple’s design is a masterpiece of Khmer architecture. It’s an astronomical calendar carved in stone. Its layout incorporates symmetry and balance a testament to Khmer artistic sensibilities.

The view from Phnom Bakheng is breathtaking. You can see Angkor Wat Angkor Thom and the surrounding plains. The sunset views are especially stunning. They paint the landscape in hues of orange amber and gold. The view has captivated visitors for centuries including the Frenchman Henri Mouhot in 1859. He marveled at the beauty and the extensive view.

Phnom Bakheng is more than just a place of worship. It’s a window into Angkor’s rich past. It’s a symbol of Khmer power and artistry. It stands as a reminder of a time when kings built temples to honor gods and ancestors. Today it stands as one of the most threatened monuments of Angkor. It is subject to extensive restoration works by APSARA and the World Monuments Fund. It is a testament to the enduring efforts to preserve this invaluable piece of Cambodian history. Enjoy the view. Enjoy the history. Enjoy Phnom Bakheng.
