Hidden within the rolling hills near the San Gabriel Mountains lies a hidden gem, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden. Did you know this 127-acre sanctuary has a captivating history intertwined with the land’s rich past? The Arboretum sits on a portion of Rancho Santa Anita, a historic Mexican land grant. This rancho held a unique position over the Raymond Basin aquifer, giving rise to sag ponds and life-sustaining springs. Baldwin Lake stands as a testament to this natural history, a draw for wildlife and people since prehistory. Native Americans, the Tongva people, called this area home, their village of Aleupkigna thriving near the life-giving waters. The land’s story took a turn in 1839 with Hugo Reid. He built the adobe home that still stands on the grounds, a California Historic Landmark. Reid, a Scotsman, married into the Tongva tribe and left behind a remarkable record of their culture in a series of letters. Through the years, Rancho Santa Anita changed hands, from early settlers to entrepreneurs, each leaving their mark on the landscape. In 1875, “Lucky” Baldwin acquired the rancho, transforming it into a showcase of his vision. He established a renowned winery, sold land, operated a water company, and even had a brickworks. The Arboretum as we know it today began to take shape in 1947. California and Los Angeles County joined forces to purchase part of the rancho, creating the public garden around Baldwin’s historic site. The gardens bloomed through the following decades, adding greenhouses and expanding collections. Today, the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden welcomes visitors with a diverse array of flora from around the globe. Wander through the Australian, South American, or Mediterranean sections. Discover the tranquil Aquatic Garden, the historic Meadowbrook, or explore the unique Prehistoric and Jungle Garden. Keep an eye out for the Arboretum’s resident peafowl. They’re descendants of the birds “Lucky” Baldwin brought from India, a flamboyant touch to his already vibrant estate. Their presence adds another layer to the rich tapestry of the Arboretum’s history, a living reminder of the colorful characters who shaped this captivating landscape.
