A bustling market unfolds before you. This is Borbeck-Mitte the heart of Borbeck. Borbeck-Mitte a vibrant borough in Essen Germany. It’s a place steeped in history. A place where the echoes of centuries resonate.

Borbeck-Mitte’s story begins long ago. In 869 Borthbeki a small rural commune was mentioned. It was one of nine communes around Essen Abbey. These communes were liable to tax. The name itself hints at its past. Bor(a)thbeki means river in a fertile lowland or river of the Bructeri. Imagine the river shaping this landscape. The fertile land sustaining life for generations.

Princess-abbess Berta von Arnsberg made Borbeck even more important. In 1288 she bought parts of the region. She built the precursor of Schloss Borbeck. By the 14th century Schloss Borbeck became the favorite residence of the princess-abbesses. This brought prestige to Borbeck-Mitte and the surrounding area. The old Romanesque church was modified in 1339. This was so the abbesses and their entourage could attend mass in style.

The 19th and 20th centuries saw dramatic changes. Essen Abbey was dissolved in 1803. Borbeck was occupied by France. It became a French municipality in 1808. The Congress of Vienna brought Borbeck to Prussia in 1815. It was declared the center of a new independent Burgermeisterei. This included several townships. The year 1816 was a hard one. The year without a summer brought famine. Recovery took years. Industrialization arrived in the 1840s. Coal mines attracted many unemployed people. Borbeck grew rapidly. In 1862 and 1874 parts of Borbeck were excorporated. They became parts of Oberhausen and Altendorf.

Despite the loss of land and population Borbeck remained significant. It was the largest administrative district in Prussia without town privileges. It had a population of over 70000. Prior to excorporation the population was over 100000. This was the population of a major city. In 1915 Borbeck-Mitte and the other boroughs became part of Essen. This involved negotiations. The Burgermeister Rudolf Heinrich used Borbeck’s size to negotiate concessions. One concession was a public indoor swimming pool. This was if the new Stadtbezirk reached 100000 inhabitants again.

Today Borbeck-Mitte is a thriving center. There’s a hospital a district court a library. Social welfare and employment offices are present. And of course that public swimming pool stands as a testament to past negotiations. The weekly market adds to the vibrancy. Schloss Borbeck remains a cultural centerpiece. It hosts exhibitions concerts and even marriages. Its large park is a haven for recreation. The Dampfbierbrauerei near the train station offers beers and local specialties. It’s a popular spot for celebrations.

Borbeck-Mitte a place where history and modern life meet seamlessly. A place where a rich past fuels a bright future. A place you won’t soon forget.
