This is a place that holds a distinct part of Queensland’s history, a place where things have changed dramatically over the years, yet it still stands a monument to the Australian prison system. This isn’t just any prison; Borallon was the first privately operated correctional facility in Australia, opening its doors in 1990, a bold experiment for the time. It housed 492 prisoners at its peak, a significant number, marking its significance. Now, as Borallon Training and Correctional Centre, it focuses on education, training, and employment, offering 50 TAFE courses, with the hope of giving prisoners a second chance at life. You can see the transformation in action – Borallon has 95 ‘residential’ and 153 ‘secure’ cells and is constantly undergoing modernization to comply with current standards.
