Did you know this sprawling 32-acre park wasn’t always a public space? It started as a humble family farm back in 1663. Imagine Richard Boothe laying the foundation for his farmhouse never dreaming of the unique legacy he’d leave behind.
Fast forward to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Enter the Boothe brothers David and Stephen two eccentric entrepreneurs with a passion for building. They weren’t just farmers. They were inventors realtors insurance agents and world travelers. Think of them as the Odd Couple but with a flair for the dramatic. David the extrovert paraded in colorful Uncle Sam costumes. Stephen a lover of music and the arts brought back exotic artifacts from his travels.
Together they transformed their family farm. Starting in 1929 they embarked on a massive building project. The result is an eclectic collection of 28 architecturally unique buildings. A 44-sided blacksmith shop a miniature lighthouse a clock tower museum even the last remaining highway tollbooth in Connecticut! These aren’t your typical park structures. They’re quirky charming and undeniably one-of-a-kind. Their Technocratic Cathedral is particularly unique. Constructed without nails using interlocking redwood beams. It looks like something out of a Lego fantasy.
The brothers’ legacy extended beyond their creative endeavors. In their wills they generously bequeathed their land and buildings to the Town of Stratford. Their wish was for a park where people could enjoy the scenic beauty. Boothe Memorial Park and Museum officially opened to the public in 1955.
Today Boothe Memorial Park is more than just a pretty place. It houses the Stratford Veterans Museum an amateur radio club a model train museum and an observatory. The park also boasts an American Rose Society-accredited rose garden. Thousands visit every year. School children even participate in a program focused on 19th-century farm life.
