Why on earth would a place be called “Bønnestenene”? You might ask yourselves that. The name, meaning “the Bean Stones,” sounds strange for a Neolithic passage grave. But legend has it that ancient people once made offerings of beans here. Whether for good harvest or divine favor, we can only guess. This impressive structure, right in front of you, is one of the most magnificent passage graves on Bornholm. Just imagine, around 3300 BC, people meticulously placed these massive stones, some weighing over 10 tons. They used simple tools, rollers, sledges, and levers. This incredible feat of engineering led people to believe that giants with supernatural powers must have built these structures. Look closely. You can still see the passage leading into the chamber, formed by twelve upright boulders and two capstones. This chamber, once covered by an earthen mound, held the remains of their ancestors and their most treasured possessions. Think of the ceremonies held here beneath the open sky, the rituals connecting them to the cycle of life and death. The Bønnestenene stand as a testament to the ingenuity and spirituality of those who came before us.
