Picture two giant heads. They gaze out from the Bonner Münster. These are the patron saints Cassius and Florentius. They stand as silent witnesses to centuries of history. The Bonner Münster is Bonn’s main Catholic church. It’s also a city landmark. Construction began long ago. Evidence suggests a Cella memoriae existed here in the 3rd century. This was a memorial site where funeral meals were held. Cassius and Florentius were martyred here. Around 400 a small church was built over their graves. A larger basilica followed in the 11th century. It was seventy meters long. It had three naves.

The Bonner Münster saw significant changes in the 12th century. Provost Gerhard von Are oversaw a rebuilding project. The cloister was built around this time. It’s a remarkably well-preserved example of Romanesque architecture north of the Alps. The Bonner Münster has witnessed coronations. Frederick the Fair was crowned here in 1314. Charles IV followed in 1346. These were significant events in the church’s history.

The Bonner Münster’s apse boasts blue-red windows. They depict the city’s patron saints. They were created by the Rhine Expressionist Heinrich Campendonk. The martyrs’ relics were once kept in precious shrines. These were on the high altar. Sadly they were destroyed during the Cologne War of 1583-84.
