Have you heard the tale of the “Swan of the East” and the night Madras was drawn into World War I? This Bombardment of Madras Site Plaque commemorates a pivotal moment. It marks the spot where the German warship SMS Emden brought the Great War to India’s doorstep.

The year was 1914. Madras, now Chennai, was a vital colonial naval base for the British Raj. Few imagined it would become a target. But on September 22nd, the seemingly impossible happened. The SMS Emden, a legendary light cruiser, stealthily approached Madras.

Driven by Captain Karl von Muller, the Emden sought to disrupt English commerce and stir the Indian population. The ship slipped past British forces undetected. It then illuminated the Burmah Oil Company’s storage tanks. At a range of 3,000 yards, the Emden unleashed its firepower.

Eyewitness accounts are scarce now. But stories passed down through generations paint a vivid picture. M R Sehsadri, a Madras resident, recalled his father’s tales of that quiet night shattered by explosions. The Emden’s shells struck the oil tanks. A massive fire erupted that raged for three days. 346,000 gallons of fuel went up in smoke.

The Emden’s crew showed a surprising degree of consideration. They angled their target to avoid hitting the narrow streets of Madras. Still, some shells strayed. One hit near the Madras High Court, damaging a compound wall. The Bombardment of Madras Site Plaque marks that very spot. Unexploded shells from the attack are now on display at the Government Museum.

Before the British could react, the Emden moved on. It shelled a merchant ship, then vanished into the night towards Pondicherry. Legend has it that an Indian national was aboard, aiding the German crew. Some say it was Chempakaraman Pillai, a revolutionary seeking to exploit the war to help India’s struggle against the British.

The attack shook Madras. The name “Emden” entered the Tamil lexicon. It became synonymous with someone powerful, frightening, and wicked. But it also became a symbol of daring. Even today, a bold person ready to face any challenge is called “an Emden” in Chennai.

The Bombardment of Madras Site Plaque reminds us of that audacious raid. It serves as a reminder of a time when global conflict touched even this distant shore. It’s a testament to the city’s resilience and a nod to a legendary ship that left an indelible mark on Madras.
