Whispers of gold and steel echo around us as we gaze upon the Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge. This isn’t just a bridge. It is a symbol of St. Petersburg’s resilience and innovation.

The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge connects the heart of St. Petersburg to the Okhta district. The Neva River flows beneath it. This bridge is more than just a way to cross the river. It is a testament to the city’s industrial growth.

Back in 1829, officials recognized the need for a bridge here. The Okhta region was becoming a major industrial hub. Powder factories and shipyards thrived there. Nicholas I approved the bridge plan. Funds were lacking so the project stalled.

The idea resurfaced in the 1860s. The city Duma organized an international contest. Engineers from around the world submitted designs. France, Germany, Austria, Spain and the United States all participated. A project by Colonel Krivoshein and military engineer Apyshkov won. Even then, construction was delayed.

Tragedy struck in 1907. The passenger ship Arkhangelsk sank. Many people lost their lives. This event spurred action. In 1909, construction finally began. The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge was named after Emperor Peter the Great. This commemorated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Poltava.

The bridge’s components were manufactured in Warsaw. They were then shipped to St. Petersburg for assembly. Look closely at the right pylon. You can see a bronze plaque describing this. The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge opened to traffic in 1911.

The bridge has had a few name changes. After the revolution, it became Bolsheokhtensky Bridge. In 1956, the name changed slightly to Bolsheokhtinsky. Today, people call it both Peter the Great Bridge and Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge.

Local legend whispers of a gold rivet hidden within the bridge’s structure. It is said that one of the million clenches is pure gold. It was disguised to match the others. Finding it is nearly impossible.

The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge is an engineering marvel. The central span could be raised in just 30 seconds. This allowed ships to pass through. The bridge’s design was innovative for its time. The two side spans have giant metal arches. These spans were unique for Russia and Europe.

The bridge features granite Norman towers. These mark the corners of the central span. They once housed lights to guide ships at night. The towers add to the bridge’s distinctive appearance.

The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge is similar to the Eiffel Tower in its construction. Both are built with riveted metal. The bridge was initially criticized for its appearance. Now, it is considered one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

In 2011, the Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge celebrated its 100th anniversary. Visitors were allowed to enter the left bank tower. This was the first time in history. The bridge has undergone reconstruction to maintain its beauty and functionality.

The Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge stands as a symbol of St. Petersburg. It connects the city’s past with its present. It reminds us of the city’s history.
