Have you ever heard of a village that gets its name from a sultan? Bolkiah A is a neighborhood here in Bandar Seri Begawan that honors one of Brunei’s most famous rulers, Sultan Bolkiah, who reigned from 1485 to 1524. The sultan is considered a legendary figure in Bruneian history. His reign is known as the “Golden Age of Brunei” because of the sultanate’s dominance throughout Borneo and the southern Philippines. Many areas in Brunei still bear the Sultan’s name. This village was one of the areas that got renamed to honor Sultan Bolkiah. Sultan Bolkiah is buried in a mausoleum that is now a popular tourist attraction. There are other places in Brunei that were also named after him. He was a very important figure in Brunei’s history and a village named after him is a testament to his enduring legacy.
