“If Caracas gave me life, Cartagena gave me glory.” The words etched on the plaque beneath the statue of Simon Bolivar in Plaza de Bolivar speak volumes about the city’s significance in the life of the great liberator. You are standing in the heart of Cartagena’s historic Walled City, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The square is a vibrant hub of activity, with vendors selling their wares, locals chatting, and tourists snapping photos. But beneath the surface of this lively scene lies a story of revolution, resilience, and a man who dared to dream of a united Latin America.

Here, in this very place, Simon Bolivar wrote his Cartagena Manifesto in 1812. This document, the first of his public statements, outlined his vision for independence from Spanish rule and ignited the flames of revolution throughout the continent. Bolivar’s campaign for liberation lasted over twenty years, ultimately leading to the establishment of Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, and Colombia as sovereign nations.

Cartagena, however, would also witness the twilight of Bolivar’s life. After years of relentless campaigning, his health began to fail. Seeking refuge from the relentless heat, Bolivar arrived in Cartagena, hoping to sail to Europe. Unfortunately, illness overtook him, and he died in Santa Marta, Colombia, on December 17, 1830. Despite his premature demise, Bolivar’s legacy lives on, not only in Colombia but throughout Latin America. His statue stands as a powerful symbol of freedom and the indomitable spirit of a man who devoted his life to the liberation of his people. As you gaze upon him astride his mighty steed, take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary life of Simon Bolivar, the man who gave Cartagena, and indeed all of Latin America, its glory.
