Boeing 757 Ship 608 served Delta Air Lines faithfully. Built in 1985, it soared through the skies for nearly three decades. The aircraft flew domestic routes. It even served with Song Airlines. Song was Delta’s innovative low-cost carrier.

Ship 608 used Pratt and Whitney PW2037 engines. These engines helped improve fuel efficiency. Delta was the launch customer for these engines. They provided ten percent better fuel efficiency.

This Boeing 757 played a significant role in aviation history. It sported a new technology wing. The engines gave excellent fuel mileage. It was the best of any standard-body airliner in 1982. The 757-200 provided approximately 45 percent better fuel efficiency. It replaced the Boeing 727 in Delta’s fleet.

Ship 608 retired from service on October 1, 2013. It was then stored in Arizona. But its story didn’t end there. On April 27, 2014, it joined the Delta Flight Museum.

Before arriving at the museum, Ship 608 was repainted. It received its original 1985 livery. This was Delta’s longest-worn paint scheme. It was known as the Classic Widget livery.

During its service, Ship 608 wore four different Delta liveries. This included Song Airlines’ green-and-white paint. It also sported Delta’s Colors in Motion livery. And Delta’s Onward and Upward livery.

Song operated a unique fleet of Boeing 757-200s. These planes featured a single-class cabin. Passengers enjoyed leather seats and free entertainment. In 2005, Song flew 48 Boeing 757-200s to 16 locations. The airline operated over 200 flights a day.

Consider the technological advancements of the Boeing 757. Its new wing design allowed for shorter take-offs. It could take off with a full passenger load. It required less runway than the older 727. The 757 could also cruise at higher altitudes. This allowed for greater fuel savings.

The 757 also shared common systems with the Boeing 767. This included wing technology and air conditioning. Pilots who flew the 767 could also fly the 757. No additional training was needed. Delta made aviation history in 1984. Two of its pilots demonstrated this common-type pilot rating.

Today, Boeing 757 Ship 608 stands proudly. It is part of the retired Delta fleet. It welcomes visitors to the Delta Flight Museum. Though direct access is restricted, its presence is a reminder.
