Isn’t it fascinating how a seed of Dharma can blossom into a sanctuary like Bodhi in Kuala Lumpur? In 1988, a group of Buddhist undergraduates established the Bodhi Buddhist Fellowship Malaysia. Brothers Yeap Keng Hwa and Teo Hee Chao led with passion. Their vow was to spread Dharma through hymns.
Bodhi KL was the name when it registered with the Registrar of Societies in October 1998. This reflected local needs. In 2018, it expanded to encompass all of Malaysia. It was renamed “Bodhi Buddhist Fellowship Malaysia”. This marked a new milestone.
For over 35 years, Bodhi has upheld its mission. It propagates Dharma through hymns. Its guiding belief is “Lyrics to Inspire, Melodies to Unite, STAGE is our Dharma Way”. For the past 30 years, Bodhi has organized Hymns Dharmaduta concerts. From “Refuge in the Triple Gem” in 1999 to “Stage. Our Dharma Way” in 2023. These concerts showcase the dynamism of youth while maintaining the solemnity of Buddhism. The Dharma’s melodious teachings continue to flow gracefully in the world.
Every Friday for 35 uninterrupted years, Bodhi has held its signature gathering. It is called “A Date with Bodhi”. It embraces individuals from all walks of life in the arms of Dharma. They feel the warmth of belonging. Hymn sharing and Dharma talks integrate. Thematic discussions and cultural activities engage participants. This heart-to-heart interaction establishes a connection with the Dharma. It enhances the quality of their lives.
Bodhi’s foundation lies in nurturing individuals. They dedicate themselves to propagating Buddhism. From 2019 to the present, Bodhi has conducted a series of programs. These include “Dharma Pals Study Group” and “Dharma Foundation Course”. Also “Dharma Propagators Training Course” and “Hymns Dharmaduta Training Course”. Furthermore “Emcee Training Course” and “ZCFT(Dharma in Work)”.
In 2022, Bodhi produced its first online Buddhist Hymns album. It is titled “Our Hymns Dairy”. It is available on various music platforms for free. People can listen to Buddhist Hymns anytime.
Recognizing the inconvenience of rented premises, Bodhi decided to purchase a new venue in 2023. This was under the leadership of the current BBFM President Brother Gary. A three-storey shop-lot in Ara Damansara, NZX Commercial Centre has been selected. It will be the new Bodhi center.
Bodhi successfully completed the first phase of fundraising in October 2023. The second phase is ongoing. Bodhi actively seeks donations to expedite the renovation. They want to provide a comfortable space for Buddhist youth who love music.
Diligently and unwaveringly, Bodhi perseveres in its mission. It propagates the profound teachings and wisdoms of the Lord Buddha. This happens through the strums of a guitar and the amplification of a microphone. It aims to benefit all sentient beings. Because we believe that the STAGE is our Dharma Way. Bodhi stands as a testament to devotion. It is a beacon of Buddhist teachings in Kuala Lumpur and beyond.
