Here’s a school that has seen significant changes. Boclair Academy stands here a beacon of education in Bearsden. This co-educational secondary school serves pupils aged 11 to 18. Boclair Academy’s story began in 1976. It was built to meet the growing demand for education in the area.

Initially, Boclair Academy accommodated overflow from other schools. These were Douglas Academy and Bearsden Academy. Over time, Boclair Academy attracted placing requests from outside East Dunbartonshire. In 1998, an annex was added to house the Maths department due to over capacity.

Fast forward to June 2016. Rangers F.C. announced a partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council. This partnership allowed 24 young players to attend Boclair Academy. These players combined their academic studies with football training. The school’s proximity to the Rangers training ground at Auchenhowie made it ideal.

The biggest change came at the start of the 2022-2023 academic year. Boclair Academy moved into a brand-new building. This new building was situated on the old school’s rugby pitch. The old building was then demolished.

Boclair Academy’s commitment to improvement is evident. A 2009 inspection praised the positive relationships between staff and pupils. It highlighted the high-quality learning and teaching. Consistently high attainment in national examinations was also noted. The school actively works to improve learning by sharing good practices. It builds on pupils’ learning from primary school.

The physical education department boasts impressive facilities. Boclair Academy includes a swimming pool. There are two games halls for various sports. Outside, pupils enjoy all-weather pitches and grass rugby fields. Inside the PE building, a fitness room awaits.

The Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies department offers more than just academics. Boclair Academy runs a chess club. Its debating society has seen success in national competitions.

Boclair Academy has even made headlines. A pupil once beat the UK Pi memorising record. However, there was also an incident involving an explosion in a school laboratory.

The school building has appeared in the comedy series Burnistoun. Tommy Reilly the winner of Orange Unsigned Act 2008 was a pupil here.

The new Boclair Academy building was designed to foster collaboration. Key subject areas are located close to each other. This encourages new links between departments and pupils. Pupils can see others learning and working together.

Construction of the new Boclair Academy began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project team implemented strict measures. They ensured the safety of the workforce and the community.

Boclair Academy is committed to sustainability. The project diverted almost all construction waste from landfill. The project also minimised the consumption of electricity, fuel and water.

So as you stand here remember Boclair Academy’s journey. From its humble beginnings to its modern facilities it embodies the pursuit of education and excellence.
