The Bockwindmühle Eldena is a testament to resilience, a historical landmark that has been twirling its story since the first half of the 18th century. Its very name, Bockwindmühle, describes its unique design. The entire mill house pivots on a central post or “bock,” allowing it to directly face the ever-shifting winds. Imagine the ingenuity of those early millers, harnessing the power of nature to grind grain for the community. This mill stood as a vital part of Eldena, mentioned in the inventory list of the Hilda/Eldena monastery as early as 1533. For centuries, grain was milled on this very hill, contributing to the daily sustenance of the people. The Bockwindmühle witnessed history unfold, surviving storms, wars, and the relentless march of time. By the 1930s, the mill ceased its operations, and sadly, neglect took its toll. In 1972, the once-proud structure collapsed, leaving only the central post as a stark reminder of its presence. But the story of the Bockwindmühle doesn’t end there. The dedicated Förderverein Eldenaer Mühle e.V. refused to let this piece of history fade away. They rallied the community and, through tireless effort and generous contributions, rebuilt this iconic windmill. Since 2002, the reconstructed Bockwindmühle Eldena has graced the landscape once more. One of only five such Bockwindmühlen remaining in Vorpommern, it represents a rare and precious type of windmill first used in Europe in the 12th century. Each Pfingstmontag, the mill celebrates German Mill Day, opening its doors and turning its sails in a tribute to its vibrant past. The Bockwindmühle Eldena is more than just a historical relic. It is a living testament to the spirit of community and the power of preservation. It stands tall against the sky, a reminder of our connection to history and the ingenuity of those who came before us.
